School Closure Extended

March 20, 2020

Dear Parents,

Governor Doug Ducey announced an extension of school closures across Arizona until April 10, 2020. You can read the full announcement here.

All school related activities and sports will be canceled through April 10th.

By now you should have received contact from your child’s principal outlining specific plans to address learning opportunities for next week. Our staff is actively making plans to adjust academic delivery for a longer closure. You can expect further communication about those plans next week.

A survey is being sent out this afternoon to help us determine if you need any assistance with devices or internet connectivity or if your children require breakfast/lunch meals from school.

Our district is not currently eligible to serve meals during school closures due to not meeting the minimum requirement for students who qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch services. We have asked the Arizona Department of Education for a waiver that will allow us to serve breakfast and lunch during the school closure. We will let you know the plans to distribute breakfasts and lunches if the waiver is granted.

In the meantime, if you need assistance with food for your children, you can contact Heather Stough at: or the ReSources Food Bank here.

We are waiting to make any decisions about all school related activities beyond April 10th, including graduations. The nature of the way COVID-19 is spreading and the subsequent response is too uncertain for us to make concrete decisions about future events at this time.

What truly sets Vail apart is our connections to our community and our commitment to serve one another. As Margaret Mead said, “Helping someone through difficulty is where civilization begins.”

It is encouraging to see so much kindness and caring across our community. That is what makes Vail such a special place to live and raise our children.

John Carruth

COVID-19, MARCH 18, 2020

March 18, 2020

Dear Parents,

We have been spending considerable time crafting plans to offer support to you and your children while our schools are closed as part of the state’s plan to slow the spread of COVID-19.

We are preparing to return to school on March 30th while simultaneously preparing for the reality that school closures could be extended.

You will be receiving notice from your child’s principal soon regarding the specifics of those plans over the course of the remainder of the closures. Should the closures be extended, we will continue to communicate with you regarding the implications and our plans to move forward.

If you have specific questions regarding plans or the impact of the closures on certain events, please consult with your child’s principal or with me. Events around COVID-19 are changing rapidly. We will do our best to answer your questions with the information that we have at that time.

Our community is a very special place. Our children are our most precious gift. While we plan and adjust to this unprecedented time, we lean on time tested “Vail values” to guide us:

  • We are a place where education is a community effort.
  • We are reminded how to ACT.
  • And as a staff, we seek to provide you, parents, with a safe place where your children can obtain a quality education.

These values don’t prevent us from making mistakes, but they do call us all to work together, to extend grace to each other when we stumble, and simply, to do the best we can while educating our children and serving our community- regardless of the circumstances.

Hello VIC students, parents, and staff,

As you are aware, Governor Doug Ducey has announced statewide school closures to take effect March 16th through March 27th. We acknowledge that our families are being impacted in many ways during this unprecedented time and that family routines may be different. The Vail Innovation Center and its staff will do our very best to provide your family support while at the same time taking care of their own families’ needs.

District leadership and teachers are working on plans to provide stability, connections, and general educational opportunities while students are at home. Luckily we have our online platform to keep us on track and moving forward. At this time we will have classes continuing as usual. Please be sure to utilize this time and get caught up or get ahead in your online classes as you have the time to do so.

Fees and End Dates: We will be holding off on collecting fees and disabling courses until the closure is over. At that time we will assess student fees and end dates for the individuals this applies to.

End of course final exams: Students will have the option to come in and take finals as we are still on site Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. until further notice. We will be practicing recommended social distancing measures and sanitizing as students complete tests to ensure student safety. You may schedule your test with the link from your teacher’s email or email Mrs. Devaughn at If anyone at home is experiencing any cough or other cold/flu-like symptoms, fever, shortness of breath, please do not come in to take your final. Please contact us by email so we can make other arrangements. If you are uncomfortable with coming in to take your final, please contact Mrs. Tankersley at

Open lab is cancelled until further notice.

State Testing: ACT (11th grade) and Pre-ACT (9th grade) with the Vail School District is postponed until further notice. We will keep you updated when we have the new date set. For now AzM2 and AIMS will go as scheduled.

Your end dates currently are May 1st for completing your classes on time to meet graduation deadlines. However with this being a fluid situation, we will notify you if there are any changes to plans for graduation and those requirements. Please use this time to finish, get ahead, or help get caught up to your target completion in your classes.

We are currently looking into options for taking final exams as we know that there are many of you ready to take your final exams and get into the next class you are needing. At this time, please be sure to work up to your final and prepare your notecard. We are working on a plan for accommodating end of course final exams.
